April 2008
We are still 'learning in action' but what are
we learning? The 'sub prime' crisis has spread the clouds of economic
depression across the Western world. The economic miracle that was,
low inflation. steadily growing economies and increased personal
wealth now looks less like a miracle and more like a period of good
weather which has now reverted to the inevitable winter storms.
Under these conditions thousands of people,
fourteen thousand in London's financial heartland we are told, will
need to find new sources of income as their organisations 'adapt' to
the new situation.
This is nothing new. It has happened at
regular intervals throughout our history; things are going well, then
too well and there needs to be a re-adjustment. The organisations
leading the 'good times' become fat and happy, overstaffed and
overpaid they loose their competitive edge. Organisation downsize,
many close, people are out of work.
Those who prosper in troubled times are able recognise the opportunities that change brings and benefit from them.
Some can do this alone, others need help. Action learning can provide
this help. In 1982, when the manufacturing sector was 'right sized',
we ran a very successful programme in the West Midlands sponsored by
the then DTI to help managers who had been made redundant to get back
into work. 50% of those who participated got a job, 30% created their
own businesses, 20% gave up..
Who will help this time?
